Miguel Bustamante (Canada, 1994)

Miguel Bustamante, known artistically as MigyB, is a self-taught painter based in Vancouver with roots in both Canada and Peru. He grew up a naturally talented artist in an artistic family, but when his childhood dream of playing professional soccer came to an end, he began pursuing a new identity. That search for identity brought him back to the beginning where a wholesome paint day with his family and artist grandmother led to him discovering his passion again; art. In the beginning, in order to distinguish his work from his family, he experimented with abstract black & white acrylic dripping. It was a distinct style in contrast to his family’s brush work & beach collages, which they were known for in Peru. Though when covid hit and his sales job was at a stand-still he returned to painting with brushes to incorporate more colours and that’s when he truly fell in love with the acrylic medium.

Since those days, MigyB has been in several group shows all over Vancouver including at Federation Gallery, The Gallery George, Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival and the VIVA Latinoamerica Exhibition. In addition to group shows, MigyB has presented two successful solo exhibitions: A Spanish Fever Dream (2023) and The Ecstatic Beauty (2024). Both displaying opposing styles that exemplify his artistic range. He is currently simultaneously developing his third and fourth, as-of-yet-untitled collections that will unveil his continuous growth and exploration as an artist.
